UAB Research Resident Tejeshwar Jain, M.D., Awarded Plenary Presentation for Innovative Gut Microbiome and Liver Cancer Research at SSAT 2025
Tejeshwar Jain, M.D. a General Surgery research resident at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has been recognized for his groundbreaking research on the gut microbiome’s role in liver cancer treatment. His project Targeting the Gut Microbiome to Improve Anti-Tumor Cytotoxic CD8 T-Cell Response Against Hepatocellular Carcinoma was selected as one of the top hepatobiliary tract abstracts and will be presented at the plenary session of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT) 2025 a prestigious honor in gastrointestinal surgical research.
Jain’s study investigates the complex interactions between the gut microbiome antitumor immune cells, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) one of the most prevalent and deadly forms of liver cancer. His research explores how modifying the gut microbiome can enhance immune system activation leading to improved treatment responses against HCC. By identifying specific microbial species and their metabolic by-products that influence CD8+ T-cell activity Jain’s work could pave the way for novel microbiome-based immunotherapies for liver cancer patients.
Conducted under the mentorship of Dr. Vikas Dudeja, Director of UAB’s Division of Surgical Oncology Jain’s research builds on the growing body of evidence linking the gut microbiome to cancer progression and immune regulation. This work has the potential to reshape therapeutic strategies by integrating microbiome modulation into existing immunotherapy and precision medicine approaches.
Upon receiving this recognitionJain expressed his gratitude: The SSAT meeting is an incredible opportunity to share our research with experts dedicated to advancing surgical oncology. Being selected for a plenary presentation is a tremendous honor, and I look forward to discussing how microbiome-targeted therapies can transform liver cancer treatment.
This selection at SSAT 2025 highlights Jain’s contributions to the evolving field of microbiome-oncology research reinforcing the significance of gut microbiota in shaping immune responses and improving cancer therapies.
Dr. Jain conducted his research under the mentorship of Dr. Vikas Dudeja Director of the UAB Division of Surgical Oncology.
Expressing his gratitude for the recognition Jain stated The SSAT meeting provides an excellent platform to engage with colleagues and mentors who share my passion for advancing surgical oncology. It is a great honor for our work to be selected for the plenary session.
