Wageningen Food & Biobased Research in collaboration with leading industry partners has launched the FIBERME project an innovative initiative aimed at transforming our understanding of dietary fibers and their impact on human health. By leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) the project will predict how different fibers influence the gut microbiome enabling the development of fiber-rich foods for optimal health benefits.
FIBERME focuses on using AI to predict microbiome responses to dietary fiber enhancing scientific insights into how these fibers interact with gut microorganisms. The gut microbiome plays a crucial role in digestion immune function and mental well-being. With low fiber intake linked to reduced microbial diversity and increased health risks FIBERME’s research is vital for improving public health worldwide.
Exploring the Impact of Plant-Based Fibers on the Gut Microbiome
FIBERME will investigate how fibers from protein crops particularly plant-based food by-products influence the human gut microbiome. The project aims to identify the most effective fiber fractions or combinations that enhance microbial diversity and support the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. A key aspect of the initiative is the development of a comprehensive database containing over 2,000 fermentation lab-based experiments analyzing how various fibers affect gut microbiota composition and functionality. This research will uncover the biochemical processes by which specific fibers are metabolized linking them to improved digestion disease prevention and overall gut health.
A key innovation of the FIBERME project is the development of an AI-powered prediction model to forecast the effects of dietary fibers on the gut microbiome. By integrating data from human studies and fermentation analyses this tool will help the food industry design personalized fiber-rich products that support specific health outcomes. Additionally FIBERME will enable the creation of targeted fiber blends that optimize microbiome benefits such as boosting short-chain fatty acid production reducing inflammation or strengthening gut barrier integrity. These insights will drive the development of next-generation fiber formulations empowering the food industry to produce healthier fiber-enriched foods.
Potential of the FIBERME Approach
FIBERME’s AI-powered tool aims to help food manufacturers develop dietary solutions that align fiber intake with societal health goals. This innovative approach will enable the creation of consumer products tailored to support digestive and metabolic health. By optimizing fiber types and quantities in food the project seeks to provide highly effective solutions for overall well-being. To refine its AI prediction model FIBERME will conduct a human study to validate laboratory findings. This direct link between research and real-world health applications positions FIBERME at the cutting edge of nutritional science.
FIBERME will enhance understanding of fiber effects on the gut microbiome helping food manufacturers create healthier fiber-rich products using AI. The project supports UN Sustainable Development Goals promoting food sustainability (SDG2) and gut health (SDG3).
